During his 2 decades at the NFB Bill Mason wrote, directed and shot more than 20 films that garnered many awards including 2 Oscar® nominations. His final film Waterwalker is an invitation to slow down, listen and rediscover the beauty of the world around us. Featuring stunning cinematography and an original score by Bruce Cockburn and Hugh Marsh, this landmark Canadian classic remains as moving and timely today as it was four decades ago.

“One of the 100 Best Canadian movies ever made!”

- Globe & Mail Reader’s List. (Louise Schwartz)

“A personal film with a global conscience”

- Geoff Pevere, The Toronto Star

‘One of the most popular movie makers this country has ever produced,”

-Geoff Pevere, The Toronto Star

"Like many other Canadians of my generation, my first introduction to Bill Mason was being mesmerized by his iconic films in a school classroom. Re-watching Waterwalker in stunning high-definition reminds us why his work remains a rite of passage for canoeists. It is not only his great skill as a paddler that captivates us; his wit and wisdom remain timeless, and his conservationist message is more urgent than ever before."

-Adam Shoalts, videographer and author, adamshoalts

" Not only did Waterwalker grab and hold my attention, it brought a sense of calmness over me and inspired me to get out and go for a walk or paddle in nature.

Bill Mason's legacy lives on through his children, but I challenge us all to share in his true kinship to the natural world and create content that reflects that true connectedness that one feels when being a part of the landscape."

-Kielyn Marrone, Wilderness Guide, Lure of the North

"From the time I was a child, the spirit and visual storytelling of Bill Mason was deeply ingrained in me. He painted the great Canadian landscape in a way that felt majestic. Poetic. Through Bill’s eyes, what could have been seen as a simple forest or lake became a setting for great adventure, beauty, and story. I’ll forever be grateful for what Bill’s vision etched into my young childhood soul."

-Goh Iromoto, videographer, gohiromoto.com

"Bill Mason went to extraordinary lengths to capture the joy and beauty of paddling,  which enticed so many to experience it for themselves.  His artistry translated into untold amounts of preservation that lives on in the hearts and minds of many,  for which we all owe a great deal of gratitude".

-Chris Prouse, media expert, chrisprouse.com

Canoetripping is the best! The nfb offers all of its collection for free and you can watch free streaming Waterwalker and all my Dad's films there. https://www.nfb.ca/film/waterwalker/
